Ukrainian Folk Festival highlights unity between Ukraine and U.S. amid ongoing war

Thousands gathered in Horsham Sunday for the annual Ukrainian Folk Festival, celebrating Ukrainian independence and culture, despite the ongoing war with Russia.

Organizers dubbed this year’s festival a “celebration of liberty and unity,” one they said focused on the relationship between Ukraine and the United States. Firstly, through cultural connections, as more than a million Americans report being of Ukrainian descent, according to U.S. Census data. HORSHAM — Thousands got a glimpse into Ukraine’s rich culture Sunday afternoon as the 2023 Ukrainian Folk Festival entertained with song, dance, food and arts.

Held at the Ukrainian American Sport Center, the festival celebrated the 32nd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Youth dance troupes dazzled attendees with performances of Ukrainian folk dances, including the HOPAK and the Kolomiyka, while food vendors served a number of ethnic foods, including varenyky, holubtsi, and borscht.

The vendor’s grove also featured a colorful selection of Ukrainian consumer goods, including embroidered shirts, biblical paintings and pysankas (intricately-decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs), as well as displays from several Ukrainian organizations and charities. Read More >

День Незалежності України в Америці святкують весь вересень. Тут збирається українська громада у кожному місті. Раніше це було дійсно святкування. Нині – кожен фестиваль – це можливість говорити про Україну, збирати кошти на допомогу Україні і придумувати нові шляхи, як можна популяризувати Україну. В українсько-американському спортивному центрі «Тризуб», де вже 32 роки поспіль до Дня Незалежності відбувається культурна колаборація українців з американцями. Почалось все з хвилини мовчання та молитви за Україну. Згадували жертв війни. Пізніше із сцени вкотре постійно наголошують, що тут, за кордоном, потрібно говорити про війну: просити допомоги на повний голос повинен кожен українець, який має чітко розуміти, що він є носієм українського за межами України.

Євген Люців вітає всіх та дякує тим, хто приїхав у цю сонячну днину подивитись та ознайомитись з українською культурою. The artists (dance troupes, musicians, singers and ensembles that have performed in previous years) have created a dynamic and integrated collaborative program. Recent events in Ukraine, the Euromaidan Protest and Revolution of Dignity as well as the Ukrainian peoples’ twilight struggle against unlawful, unjustified and heinous  Russian armed aggression, have forged a unified Ukrainian national identity, both in Ukraine and in the Diaspora. America’s support of Ukraine’s commitment to a self-determined democratic future - to life, liberty, freedom and justice – has created permanent bonds of friendship between the two nations. This year’s festival honors these special relationships and developments and robustly salutes the zeal, valor and dedication of the Ukrainian people.

$2 of each paid admission will be donated to Humanitarian Aid for Victims of War in Ukraine!
